According to Uber’s press release, the project has already started in Zagreb, Croatia, with the participation of the local company Verne.
After Zagreb, the partnership will be expanded to four more cities in Europe, which remain unnamed for now. «Additional details will be announced in stages, and the expanded partnership also includes plans to expand into the Middle East,» the partners announced.
It is planned that as part of the partnership, Pony.ai will provide its L4 autonomous driving technology, and Uber will provide customers with access to the service through its global platform: the application will allow them to book robo-taxi rides.
At the same time, as the release states, «fleet operations can be carried out by local partners selected for each market.»
Earlier this year, the two companies partnered with Croatia’s Verne to launch Europe’s first commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb, with Verne acting as the fleet operator.
Pony.ai is currently operating fully autonomous robo-taxi services in four cities in China, where the company has reached breakeven in several markets.
