Gaming company Ubisoft has opened public access to the Chroma color blindness simulation tool, which its studios have been using for several years. What is this product and what is it for?
According to research, there are about 300 million people worldwide who are color blind. Ubisoft says that Chroma allows developers to accurately replicate their experiences and create accessible content that meets their needs. The open-source tool works by applying a filter to the game screen without hindering performance.
«Over the past few years, Chroma has proven to be a highly effective tool for us at Ubisoft. It has allowed us to assess the accessibility of our games for people with color blindness much faster and more comprehensively than ever before. Because we believe accessibility is a journey, not a race, we are excited to share Chroma with the entire industry. We invite everyone to use it, provide feedback, and contribute to its future development,» said David Tisserand, Director of Accessibility.
Chroma’s development began in 2021, when Ubisoft’s Indian QA team was working on a tool that would provide real-time feedback and allow developers to control the game while simulating color blindness. Chroma currently uses the Color Oracle algorithm and can run on either dual or single screens; the tool works with hotkeys and has a customizable overlay.
«Chroma was created with the clear goal of making accessibility for people with color blindness a natural part of the creative and testing process…Open source Chroma is a proud step forward that will allow everyone to benefit from this innovation,» says Jawad Shakeel, Product Quality Manager.
According to her, the developers of the tool overcame significant difficulties during its creation, but by working closely with accessibility experts and improving the tool based on feedback, they created a solution that eliminated delays and inaccuracies.
The project’s GitHub page notes that Chroma is a universal solution for detecting color blindness issues in games. It reproduces protanopia, deutanopia, and tritanopia filters on the game screen, helping users flag accessibility issues in real time.
Players sued Ubisoft over the game’s closure in 2014. The company’s lawyers reminded them that they did not own the game they purchased, but only a «limited access license.»
