OpenAI and AMD have announced a multi-billion dollar partnership in which the companies will collaborate to build AI data centers powered by AMD processors. OpenAI has committed to purchasing 6 gigawatts of AMD chips, starting with the MI450 model next year.
Neither company disclosed the exact financial details of the deal, but AMD said that each "gigawatt" of power costs tens of billions of dollars, so it's possible the total deal could be worth more than $60 billion, Tom's Hardware reports .
In return, OpenAI will receive the right to purchase up to 160 million AMD shares (about 10% of the company) at a symbolic price of $0.01 per share. This right will be granted gradually, depending on OpenAI's success in deploying projects, and will be exercised only if AMD shares increase. Specific terms remain undisclosed.
The first batch of 1 gigawatt MI450 chips is expected in the second half of 2026. Altman emphasized that the development of AI infrastructure has reached a stage "when the entire industry must unite, and everyone will receive significant benefits" - this applies not only to chips and data centers, but also to all supply chains.
