Starlink alternative for drones and NRCs: Ukrainian Militech Group introduces 1.5-watt LTE modem "Grim"
The October Starlink restrictions on the front lines clearly demonstrated the critical need for alternative communication channels for the military. The answer to this challenge was the development of the Ukrainian MilTech company Militech Group, which presented the LTE modem "GRIM" to ensure stable control of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ground robotic complexes (GRCs)
The main technical feature of the device is the amplification of the output power of the LTE signal transmitter to 1.5 W, which is six times higher than the performance of standard commercial modems (about 0.25 W). This allows you to maintain a stable connection with the operator and ensure the system's operating radius of up to 45 km even in areas with extremely weak cellular network coverage.
Alternative in the face of disarmament risks
In modern warfare, UAVs and robotic systems perform from 50% to 90% of combat missions on the front — from reconnaissance and destruction to logistics and mining. The loss of a stable communication channel threatens the partial disarmament of units.
CCO Militech Group Vasyl Polishchuk
Given the limitations of fiber optic coils in terms of range and cost, as well as the instability of external partners in providing Starlink, LTE currently seems to be the only reliable solution for military helicopters and ground robotic complexes.
Polishchuk added that the company's R&D team has been working on signal amplification technology since 2024, anticipating possible communication challenges in the air defense system. The technology has now been tested, is ready for use in combat conditions, and has already been officially presented on the Brave1 defense platform.
Technical specifications
The modem is built on the basis of a standard MikroTik paid module, supplemented with a proprietary amplifier and adapted for operation under increased load.
Key device parameters:
support for two SIM cards to ensure seamless transition between base stations of different operators;
the basic version does not include an antenna kit - antennas are selected individually for each type of UAV or NRC;
The manufacturer provides support during installation on unmanned platforms and helps with the selection of optimal mobile networks.
During 2026, Militech Group is forming batches of 500 units of the GRIM modem for Ukrainian manufacturers of unmanned systems. From January 2027, the device is planned to be made available to foreign customers.

Британець створив інструмент для злому Starlink з деталями на $25. Чи виведе він термінал з ладу? WIRED
