Ukrainian drone startup Black Forest Systems has announced a $400,000 investment round from Swedish venture capital firms Front Ventures and Hede Capital Partners AB. The investment will accelerate the development and production of unmanned systems focused on infantry needs.

Black Forest Systems (BFS) creates vertically integrated platforms that combine proprietary electronics, secure communications, and software control into unified systems. They are optimized for low operator cognitive load, rapid deployment, and reliable operation in electronic warfare environments. The company notes that this approach requires more time in the initial stages, but creates the technological foundation necessary for the operational implementation of various types of unmanned platforms for the military in the future.

“Our mission is to shift complexity from the operator to the technology itself,” says Oleksandr Davydenko, CEO of BFS. “We create systems that simplify decision-making and give every soldier access to advanced unmanned capabilities.”

The company's flagship system is the compact SHADOX reconnaissance complex, designed for rapid deployment and close-range operations.

The design with protected propellers allows operation inside buildings and trenches, while built-in stabilization and intuitive controls allow operators with minimal training to effectively use the system.

As BFS explains, unlike traditional FPV systems that require specialized external operators, the company is focused on bringing drone capabilities directly to infantry units, allowing soldiers to use sophisticated drones without the need for extensive pilot training.

“We invest in technologies that create long-term strategic potential. Black Forest Systems is not just about developing a drone platform, it is about creating a technological foundation in the field of autonomy, electronics and secure communications that can be scaled for many unmanned applications. We see this as a strategically important step to strengthen Europe's defense technology potential,” says Patrick Olson, CEO of Hede Capital Partners.
