The head of the Ukrainian World of Warcraft community and Unity specialist spoke about recruiters' complaints about his activity: what they don't like about the candidate

Unity Game Developer and World of Warcraft Ukrainian Community Manager Mark Tsemma heard from one of his employers that some recruiters in candidate databases had left feedback about him, saying that such activity could distract him as a Unity specialist. According to the IT specialist, these skills could be useful for the IT team.

«I heard from one of the employers that some recruiters somewhere in the candidate databases left a review about me, that they are repelled by the presence in my profile of information that I am the head of the Ukrainian World of Warcraft community, and that it kind of defocuses me as a Unity specialist,» Mark Tsemma wrote on LinkedIn.

The Ukrainian World of Warcraft community Mark has over 5,400 members, led by Mark Tzemma since January 2023. He is also involved in organizing periodic esports competitions, searching for partners and sponsors, and communicating with Blizzard.

Mark has over 7 years of experience working with Unity and 11 years in game development. Therefore, according to the developer, such additional skills related to managing the WoW community can be useful. For example, in the future they can allow an IT professional to manage a team or conduct business communication with a foreign customer.

In addition, Mark claims that managing the community takes him about an hour a day, in his free time. Therefore, the IT professional turned to recruiters with questions: " Is it bad to have such an activity now in Ukraine? Don’t you often say in interviews and in job descriptions that the ideal candidate should be proactive, initiative and preferably with management skills? »

The developer believes that managing the WoW community is about social activism, a pro-Ukrainian stance, volunteering, and popularizing Ukrainian esports.

«Our UA WoW community supports our military and we hold regular gatherings and charity tournaments. In the photo you can see the thanks we have already received, which inspire the community and me personally to continue this path with pride,» Mark noted in the post.

Mark also notes that in addition to claims of such activity, there have also been claims from recruiters and companies that he has «irrelevant skills.» The developer believes that knowledge of additional programming languages and experience in game design cannot be called irrelevant for a Unity specialist.

«Hardly, because it helps me be flexible and adapt to the needs of the product and the client, and also to see the game not just as code, but as a holistic system and product in the eyes of the players. Isn’t it more important today to be a flexible specialist who quickly adapts and is sociable and proactive than a rock star in some 1 programming language and technology?», — the developer noted.

Mark is currently looking for a job.

«And if you share these values, I would be happy to talk about Middle+/Senior Unity Developer vacancies in Remote or Hybrid format in Lviv,» the IT professional added.
