Previously, a number of media outlets, including the Western gaming publication Polygon, wrote that the Ukrainian developers of the Metro series (Metro 2033, Last Light, and Exodus) would no longer be called 4A Games Ukraine. They allegedly rebranded, and now their studio is called Reburn.
The publication quoted CEO Dmytro Lymar as saying that the reason for changing the studio’s name was «to avoid confusion when two separate companies have the same brand 4A Games». However, the confusion could not be avoided.
«Previously, the name 4A Games was used by a studio in Malta and a studio in Ukraine, the latter of which took the name Reburn. 4A Malta exists as a separate company, owned by Embracer Group», — Polygon says.
Lymar said that the name Reburn was created by a creative agency in Kyiv.
«The idea was that it would be better if the trademark remained with the Metro series, and for the new intellectual property we would create a new brand. We came up with Reburn with the help of a cool creative agency here in Kyiv, which will announce its participation a little later,» said the CEO of the new studio.
According to him, Reburn means «to burn again,» but for developers it has a meaning «similar to rebirth or reincarnation in a new form», to create a new game with its own intellectual property.
Studio 4A Games congratulated Reburn on the announcement of La Quimera, but provided clarification regarding the «rebranding».
«Congratulations to our Ukrainian brothers and sisters at Reburn on the announcement of La Quimera, some of whom are our former colleagues. To be clear, we have not rebranded or changed in any way. The same founders and heart of the Metro series continue to work on the next Metro game in our studios in Ukraine, Malta and remotely», — 4A Games reported.
The studio noted that they are also continuing to work on other new projects mentioned in previous studio updates, and can’t wait to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Metro series in March.
