These are, he said, «side jobs». By this video game term, Cherny meant «interesting weekend projects,» like «making kombucha». This means that the candidate is interested in other things.
«These are well-rounded people. These are the kind of people I like to work with», said the developer.
Side projects are an important part of Cherny’s career, and he is one of the key figures at Anthropic. He created Claude Code, a tool that is now popular among programmers.
Cherny noted that he prefers «universals» among new hires. He gave the example of an engineer who knows how to code but can also work on product and design. This generalist engineer also collects user feedback.
«This is how we recruit for all positions now. Our project managers write code, our data analysts write code, our user researchers write a little bit of code», said developer Claude Code.
Cherny has worked in startups since he was 18, performing various tasks. According to him, working in large companies forces you to move in a certain direction.
