How to speak the same language as engineers: A Senior PM creates an interactive technical skill map for IT managers"
Senior Technical Product Manager Andrii Osypenko created an interactive technical skills map that can help non-technical managers master the technical context, better understand engineering teams, and manage projects more effectively.
Senior Technical Product Manager Andrii Osypenko created an interactive technical skills map that can help non-technical managers master the technical context, better understand engineering teams, and manage projects more effectively.
According to the author of the project, the idea for the tool arose from his own experience and the lack of clear explanations at the beginning of his career.
“I always say: you can’t manage what you don’t understand. But where to start when there are a lot of technologies, engineers don’t speak human language, and the project requires you to know all this from yesterday? And there is never a person nearby who can explain: → what it is → why do I need it → how to apply it in my work. That’s why I made an interactive map of technical skills for managers. Everything in simple language. This is exactly what I lacked when I started,” says Andrii Osypenko on LinkedIn.
Structure and capabilities of the interactive map
The RedCamp platform contains 70 technical topics, broken down by difficulty level and direction, and shows 112 connections between them. It covers a wide range of technologies: from APIs, JSON, and client-server architecture to database sharding, cloud functions, security, and infrastructure scaling.
The map is divided into four key growth levels:
01. Start (15 topics) — mastering the basic "developer language."
04. Architectural thinking (9 topics) — working with highly loaded systems.
In addition, the topics are organized into eight key areas: Fundamentals, Development and Delivery, Infrastructure, Databases, DevOps, Documentation, Networking, and Security.
"The map shows how skills and technologies are connected; where you will encounter each technology and what business indicators it affects; what each tool is needed for and how to talk about it with engineers. You can mark each skill on it and understand where you need to grow next," the author of the project notes.
Connection with career growth and integration with intensive
An important feature of the interactive map is tracking one’s own progress. Users can mark topics they have already mastered, and the platform automatically calculates their level of preparation and shows guidelines for projects and potential salary.
“I also collected statistics from DOU and Djinni. They show how certain technical skills can lead you to more complex projects, and with them to a higher salary,” adds Andrii Osypenko.
All 70 topics of the map are broken down into a special 7-module intensive (designed for approximately 20 hours). The training blocks cover the basics of technical theory (16 topics), infrastructure (14 topics), databases (10 topics), data security (10 topics), DevOps (8 topics), network communication (7 topics), and documentation (5 topics). The training is based on real-world project examples and without the need to write code.
A Ukrainian created an interactive memory map of the Kakhovka Reservoir. The project has already conquered Reddit (almost 500,000 views) and even survived a ban due to Russian bots
