Most often, such cases occur in places where people actively use QR codes for quick payments: when parking, paying for public transportation, entering events, or making charitable contributions, explains the Cyberpolice.
It is very difficult to visually distinguish a high-quality fake code from the real one, so the main advice is to always check the website address before entering any confidential data.
Here are a few rules to follow:
Scan QR codes only from trusted sources - avoid codes placed on random stickers, flyers or advertisements;
before scanning, check the sticker - pay attention to possible signs of tampering (additional layer, uneven edges, different font);
Use the link preview feature — most smartphones allow you to see the URL before you click.
always pay attention to the web address after clicking on the QR code - even if the site looks convincing, any differences in the domain may be a sign of fraud;
check for a secure connection (https://) — if the site does not have a security certificate, it is unsafe to enter any information on it;
do not enter bank details on unknown websites and unnecessarily;
if you find a suspicious QR code, notify the institution's administration, support service, or law enforcement agencies;
Use virtual or temporary cards for online payments - this will help avoid significant financial losses in the event of a card financial data leak.
If you have become a victim of fraud, you need to contact your bank to block your card, you can also submit an electronic appeal to the cyber police using the link .
