On April 30, Visa introduced the Visa Intelligent Commerce program, which allows artificial intelligence to find and purchase products.
«AI agents have enormous potential in commerce: from optimizing routine purchases, such as ordering groceries, to more complex tasks involving search and decision-making, such as booking a table at a hard-to-get restaurant or a concert ticket,» said Jack Forestell, Visa’s chief product and strategy officer.
To develop AI commerce at the speed and scale needed, the company is partnering with Anthropic, IBM, Microsoft, Mistral AI, OpenAI, Perplexity, Stripe and Samsung. Developers building AI agents for commerce will have access to the Visa payment network, the company said in a statement.
Visa announced that it is partnering with a group of leading AI chatbot developers to connect their systems to the Visa payment network. The goal is to hand over the work of personal budget planning to AI bots. Users will be able to set preferences and spending limits, after which AI agents will search for products and make purchases.
The company is adapting its infrastructure, standards, and capabilities for AI-powered commerce. And soon, consumers will be able to instruct AI agents, through AI platforms, to use their Visa card data (4.8 billion cards today) for any payment scenario at any merchant that accepts digital payments.
Pilot projects launched on Wednesday, ahead of wider use expected next year.
