Visa has overtaken Mastercard in terms of the number of cards in Ukraine for the first time. Why did this happen and how many cards are there per Ukrainian?

In turn, as Interfax-Ukraine writes, citing NBU data, the number of cards issued by Mastercard’s main competitor decreased by 0.2 million, or 0,3%, over the same period.
In total, as of April 1, there were 69.22 million Visa cards and 67.75 million Mastercard cards in circulation. That is, we can conclude that there are more than four payment cards for every adult Ukrainian.
In terms of the number of active cards, both giants in Ukraine are almost equal in terms of indicators as of the beginning of April (29.94 million — Mastercard and 29.32 million Visa). Cards with at least one spending transaction in the last month are considered active.
According to NBU statistics, Visa overtook Mastercard in terms of monthly volume and number of non-cash transactions in Ukraine back in November-December 2024.
Recall that at the end of 2024, monobank decided to transfer the majority of clients from Mastercard to Visa, which also significantly affected the above indicators.
State-owned PrivatBank maintains a leading position in the market in terms of the number of cards: since the beginning of the year, it has increased this indicator by 2,6%, or by 1.49 million, to 58.17 million. Monobank has a total number of cards in circulation of 24.18 million.
