The Zaporizhia Employment Center has published a vacancy for a software engineer with a meager salary.

«There are no people, they said. I remind you, higher IT education is required here. And they have a leading specialist with an office, 5 days a week, full-time, without remote work and without booking,» wrote Internet network engineer Oleksandr Mukas, commenting on the job offer.

Career consultant Ilya Luzan described a startup vacancy on LinkedIn, where, according to him, a team of over 80 people works «for the founder’s idea» and a potential 12% of the company, which will supposedly be distributed among all participants in five years — if they do not leave the project earlier.

«There are 83 of us, and we are rooting for the founder’s idea, as well as for his charisma and ability to sell air,» Luzan wrote.

According to the consultant, the startup claims to have connected 300,000 hotels and 20,000 users, but has no monetization or bookings through the site. «20K users >> 0 bookings,» he quipped.

Despite the criticism, Luzan admits that such projects can be useful for juniors without commercial experience — as a way to get the first cases for their resume and understand how the basic processes work in an IT team.

Among the advantages, he mentions the opportunity to get «2 months of commercial experience» for your CV, work with a real product, and see development from the inside — from requirements and design to testing and production.

At the same time, the consultant warns that such stories are often based on manipulation and inflated promises.

Luzan also believes that this format is not suitable for people who need a stable income or who already have commercial experience.

The topic of unpaid work in IT and «paying with experience» periodically returns to the Ukrainian tech community against the backdrop of a difficult market for juniors. Due to high competition, some candidates agree to unpaid internships or work in startups without a salary in order to get their first experience and a line on their resume.

Dev.ua reader Pavlo Lekhitsky sent us a vacancy that immediately contains several red flags. «I came across a super red flag and cringe vacancy and simply could not help but share it with the community. Here, screen sharing, and a permanent online conference with a camera are mandatory, and the work schedule is minute-by-minute with breaks, and crypto, and they even consider Russian/Russian candidates and this is like deftech,» he noted.

Lead Engineer Taras Dvoryan shared a vacancy in which the employer offers a strange part-time job for mentoring a junior. «We condemn! This is a ‘work format,’» he noted .

«An eight-day workday is just what you need»

Igor Hrinochka, sales manager, showed another strange vacancy, where the employer made sure that the specialist had no free time. «Friday is the time for funny vacancies. At least you don’t have to work at night. An eight-day workday is just asking for it. You have to learn to wake up a day earlier,» he noted.

«Pay for services yourself»

UX/UI Designer Anastasia Krystopchuk spoke about a fraudulent hiring scheme she encountered while looking for a job. According to her, the fake company CarrotDevs published vacancies on Work.ua, conducted interviews and sent offers, after which it tried to gain access to candidates' bank details through an «onboarding platform.»

According to Anastasia, the vacancy seemed «too good to be true,» but the process didn’t arouse suspicion at first. After applying, an HR manager quickly responded and offered to complete a test task.

«The test was very easy and short, so I thought, what the heck, why not,» she writes.

After that, the candidate was scheduled for a technical interview. According to her, the «team leader» asked «really good questions,» so there were almost no doubts. Later, she was sent an offer — although, according to the designer, her test file was not even opened.

The first serious suspicions arose when the company asked to provide personal documents even before showing the employment contract. Additional concerns were a regular email address instead of a corporate one; an interview without a video from the company; the absence of people from the offer on LinkedIn; a «Canadian company» that recruits in Ukrainian through Work.ua; a website created on Webflow; and an AI-generated image in Telegram HR.

Later, Anastasia found another girl who had already fallen into this scheme. According to her, after the offer, candidates were transferred to the «onboarding» stage and asked to register on an internal platform.

There, it was alleged that a paid subscription was required to access the system. The company promised to compensate for the costs or advised to «not waste time» and pay for it yourself.

«The girl paid for a month, something like $7, but the point is different, now the platform has the card data and can debit as much as it wants and whenever,» the designer notes.

After that, according to her, company representatives stopped contacting her, and the candidate was informed that «cooperation would not work out.»
