Infosys founder Narayama Murthy believes the 70-hour work week is what India needs and has revealed he also believes the weekend was a mistake.
Speaking to India’s CNBC-TV18 at the Global Leadership Summit in Mumbai last week, Murthy reiterated that he «doesn’t believe in work-life balance.»
«I have not changed my views; I will take it with me to the grave,» he claimed .
The argument Murthy and the like-minded colleagues he cites is that India is a poor country that needs to work on itself. The balance between work and personal life, in his opinion, can wait.
The founder of Infosys cites Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet as an example of true workaholics, claiming that the prime minister works 100 hours a week and suggesting that not following his example shows a lack of appreciation.
«Frankly, I was a bit disappointed in 1986 when we went from a six-day week to a five-day week. I wasn’t too happy about it. I think we have to work really hard in this country because there’s no substitute for hard work, even if you’re the smartest person,» he said.
Murthy claims he himself worked six-and-a-half days a week before retirement, typically 14 hours and 10 minutes a day, waking up at 6:20 a.m. and assembling tools at 8:30 p.m.
