Europe has launched its own public database for tracking software vulnerabilities, called GCVE (Global Cybersecurity Vulnerability Enumeration). The GCVE database, located at db.gcve.eu, is designed to address the issue of possible discontinuation of support for the American CVE program, writes HackRead.
Unlike traditional centralized systems, GCVE uses a decentralized approach where authorized groups, known as GCVE Numbering Authorities (GNA), can assign identification numbers to new security flaws without central approval.
The platform collects and organizes information from more than 25 different sources, creating a convenient environment for analyzing cyber threats. An open API facilitates integration with existing security tools, allowing security professionals and developers to track and respond to threats faster.
By creating a decentralized and interoperable alternative to the US CVE program, Europe aims to minimize the risk of a “single point of failure” and eliminate potential uncertainty over funding. The move is expected to improve the speed and reliability of vulnerability documentation, allowing businesses and governments to respond more effectively to emerging cyber threats and enhancing overall global security.
