Another step towards tech sovereignty: European Parliament rejects Google in favor of French search engine
The European Parliament will switch from Google to French search engine Qwant, a move that underscores the EU's desire to reduce its dependence on US tech giants and support local alternatives.
The European Parliament will switch from Google to French search engine Qwant, a move that underscores the EU's desire to reduce its dependence on US tech giants and support local alternatives.
The European Commission will also unveil new steps in chip manufacturing, cloud services and artificial intelligence today, as part of a broader "Buy and Use European" campaign, Reuters reports .
Starting June 4, 2026, Qwant will be set as the default search engine in Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox browsers for the entire European Parliament.
The changes will be applied automatically, but users will still be able to choose other search engines.
“This is part of a broader set of measures aimed at reducing the European Parliament’s dependence on digital tools from outside the EU, as well as promoting European privacy-oriented services,” said a spokesman for the European Parliament, which employs 720 lawmakers, as well as thousands of assistants and administrative staff.
