“At LinkedIn, we have an ‘economic graph’ that spans over a billion members. We have data on companies, jobs, and skills. It’s a really impressive picture of the job market in real time. And we looked at this question because everyone is interested in the answer: is AI impacting jobs right now? We looked and, frankly, we didn’t see it,” he said during an interview at the Semafor World Economy Summit this week.
Instead, the top manager suggested that the reduction in hiring is more closely related to rising interest rates, TechCrunch writes .
“We’re not seeing the impact that we would expect in the areas where everyone usually talks about AI… for example, in industries like customer support, administrative work, or marketing. These are the segments where we would see the impact if AI were really making a significant impact right now,” Lovit continued.
Lovitt also noted that LinkedIn's data does not suggest that the hiring rate of college-age youth looking for their first job has fallen "more sharply" compared to those in the middle or final stages of their careers.
However, he does not rule out that the situation may change in the future.
"That doesn't mean it won't happen in the future, but for now, it hasn't," he concluded.
However, Lovitt offered a caveat. He noted that the skills required for the average job have changed by 25% in the past few years. With the development of AI, LinkedIn expects that figure to reach 70% by 2030.
