About 30% of candidates at Kyivstar.Tech are screened based on culture, 70% based on technical skills. The turnover rate in the company is quite low — out of 250 specialists, we have 1%.
As Misha Nestor, director of digital product development at telecom giant Kyivstar and Chief Product Officer at Kyivstar.Tech, told DOU in an interview, unsuccessful hires at the company are rare. «In our entire history, we have probably hired four or five people unsuccessfully. We screen out 70% of people based on technical skills,» he said.
According to Nestor, there are the fewest mishires with engineers because they are very straightforward. «Sometimes, during an interview, they would immediately say: ‘I’m an engineer, I don’t care what kind of users you have — let the jacket-managers deal with it.’ That’s fine, that’s their life position, but it’s not our way,» says the Chief Product Officer at Kyivstar.Tech.
Nestor says that candidates often resort to deception during interviews. «If a person has deceived — and this happens often during interviews — they get confused because they are not prepared for such questions. And it is noticeable. For a team of 250 specialists, we have a 1% turnover rate. Specialists do not reach the level they themselves indicate. It often happens that a person has written a lot of things in their resume, and after a 10-minute interview with a technical lead, they have nothing to talk about, because they actually lack knowledge. We screen out about 30% of candidates based on culture: we understand that the person is not ours,» he says.
According to him, those who have been employed in outsourcing often become cynical. «Since, due to their nature (they sell hours here, and you have to make money in products), you are treated as something that needs to be 'resold,' a person has to defend themselves. And they perceive this attitude towards themselves as the norm and transmit it to others,» the top manager notes.
He adds: if a specialist has spent five to seven years in this environment, it begins to become part of his personality. «And it is difficult to eradicate it. It is like a driver who runs a red light at a pedestrian crossing. There is no need for deep analysis and psychological tests,» Nestor notes.
Currently, the Kyivstar.Tech team has 606 employees. 126 of them are reserved, seven are in the military.
