«Unfortunately, I have been a public victim of AI, but the truth is that the threat of AI affects each of us,» the star said after her family members showed her a video of Johansson, generated by AI, wearing a T-shirt with an outstretched hand and middle finger, a Jewish star and Kanye West’s name, CNN reports.
The fake video referenced reactions from Scarlett Johansson and other celebrities to West’s recent anti-Semitic remarks and a swastika shirt he was selling on his Yeezy website before Shopify took it down.
The fake video also included AI-generated images of about two dozen celebrities, including Adam Levine, Mila Kunis, Lenny Kravitz, Mark Zuckerberg, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Stiller, Natalie Portman, David Schwimmer and others, set to the music of «Hava Nagila,» a Jewish folk song commonly performed at holiday cultural events.
The video was created by Israeli generative AI entrepreneur team Elevaitor.
«We expected the video to go viral, but we didn’t expect how viral it would become,» said Guy Bar, founder of the Elevaitor AI technology center, which developed the video with co-creator Ori Bejerano, according to The Jerusalem Post.
According to him, the video has an important impact and touches on the acute problems of many people around the world who suffer from violence, racism and anti-Semitism.
«I am a Jew who does not tolerate anti-Semitism or any hate speech. But I also firmly believe that the potential for hatred, multiplied by AI, is a much greater threat than any person who takes responsibility for it,» Scarlett Johansson said.
She said that everyone should call out the abuse of artificial intelligence, «regardless of its message.» «Otherwise we risk losing control of reality,» Johansson added.
The star was outraged that the US government has not yet passed legislation against artificial intelligence. «A 1,000-foot wave of artificial intelligence is approaching, to which several progressive countries, not including the United States, have responded responsibly,» she said.
