"A way to turn pain into something useful for others": a developer created an app after losing her dog. How Jess helps pet parents care for their pets

Frontend developer Anastasia Grekova created the mobile application Jess, which helps pet owners store all the important information about their pet in one place. The project was born from a personal story — after Anastasia lost her dog to illness. The application has an AI assistant, and thanks to the offline-first approach, all data is available even without the Internet. In addition, the project has a charitable component: the developer will donate part of the profit from Jess to animal shelters.

Anastasia lost her dog, an English Cocker Spaniel named Jesse, after a complicated surgery on May 14, 2026. Almost two weeks later, the first commit of the app for pet owners was created.

“Creating Jess became a way for me to turn pain into something useful for others,” Anastasia said in a comment to dev.ua.

Jess is an app that helps pet parents take better care of their pets and not lose important information about their health and care.

In the application you can:

  • create an animal profile;
  • keep medical records, information about vaccinations, medications, surgeries, and parasite treatments;
  • record important events and contacts of veterinarians;
  • add reminders;
  • track daily care.

Jess also has an assistant who helps with basic pet care questions.

Anastasia Grekova, Frontend developer at the startup "Learn Simply" and author/founder of the Jess application.
The approach to functionality was very practical: I started from what I myself lacked when Jessie was sick. In stressful moments, it is very difficult to quickly remember when the vaccination was, what medications were given, what the vet said, what tests were done before, or when the last heat was. Therefore, I wanted to make an application that does not overload, but helps to quickly find what is important and take care of the animal more calmly.

The developer added that she was greatly helped by the first real users who actively tested the application, shared ideas and provided meaningful feedback. They were the ones who helped make Jess as useful as possible in practice.

According to Anastasia, the main advantages of her application are the combination of practical pet care functionality, an emotional component, and an offline-first approach.

“Technically, it was important for me that the main data was available even without the Internet, especially now, in our reality. Therefore, the application is built with an offline-first approach: the user can work with important information locally, and synchronization and an account add an additional level of convenience,” Anastasia emphasized.

Social component of the project

“The social component is especially important to me: I plan to direct part of Jess's profits to help animal shelters,” the developer noted.

Jess has a free version with basic functionality and a Premium subscription with no limits. Premium gives you access to an AI assistant, PDF data export, analytics, and shared profile management ("co-parenting"), for which only one paid subscription is enough for two people.

There are currently two plans available: annual for $17.99 and lifetime access for a special price of $39.99.

From commit to Google Play Market — one month

The application was created within a month: the first commit was made on May 27, and on June 29, the project was officially released on the Google Play Market.

This month was the most intense, as Anastasia independently went through the full cycle of product creation: from thinking through the concept, design, architecture, and functionality to direct implementation, testing, bug fixing, and going through all stages of publication on the store.

To speed up the processes, the developer actively involved AI tools, in particular ChatGPT and Claude, which became full-fledged partners for her. AI helped with:

  • architecture analysis and search for optimal technical solutions;

  • writing and reviewing code;

  • generation of interface texts, marketing materials and preparation of the release for Google Play.

At the same time, Anastasia emphasizes that AI acted only as an assistant to quickly overcome complex development stages. The main implementation, architectural solutions, product logic, QA, and final implementation remained entirely her responsibility, since artificial intelligence cannot replace the developer's responsibility.

About plans

“The immediate plans are to develop the functionality, improve the assistant, add more useful scenarios for daily care, expand the knowledge base, and make the application even more convenient for pet parents,” Anastasia added.

Additionally, localization into other languages and further synchronization improvements are planned.
