A Ukrainian developer has created a convenient viewer for IES and EULUMDAT files. How can LumaScope make the work of lighting professionals easier?

Senior Software Engineer Serhiy Chechuy has developed a photometric viewer for IES and EULUMDAT files for macOS. The application is designed to facilitate the daily work of lighting technicians, lighting planning engineers, architects, and technical designers.

Why was there a need for LumaScope?

The idea of creating our own solution arose due to the imperfection of existing tools on the market. As the developer explains , most of the existing programs for viewing IES files are outdated, work inaccurately, or even "break" when trying to open non-standard or real photometric files from production.

LumaScope was created after a month of intensive development, debugging, and testing on hundreds of real photometric files. Chechuy's main goal was to create a fast, reliable, and user-friendly tool focused on real-world workflows for professionals.

Key features and benefits of the application

One of the main advantages of LumaScope is the ability to successfully open and visualize those IES files that display with errors or do not open at all in other viewers.

The program supports all IES LM-63 standards (1986, 1991, 1995, 2002 and 2019) with all TILT modes, as well as the European EULUMDAT format (.ldt) with all symmetry types.

The application provides instant local data parsing, supports folder navigation, file opening via Drag-and-Drop, and convenient filters for searching in large directories.

LumaScope builds accurate polar and linear (Cartesian) diagrams, calculates key metrics (lumens, power, Im/W efficiency, peak luminous intensity, beam angles), and also generates luminous intensity tables (Candela table).

Users can overlay graphs from multiple files onto a single chart to visually compare the shape of the light beam and compare their parameters in a comparison table.

Graphs can be exported to PNG, vector PDF or SVG, and data to CSV. In addition, quick viewing of files in Finder via Quick Look (by pressing the spacebar) and generation of single-page A4 PDF reports have been implemented.

Security and localization

LumaScope is designed as a fully native Mac application running in an isolated environment. It operates 100% locally on the device, collects no user data, and ensures complete file privacy.

The app already supports five languages (English, German, French, Spanish, and Dutch) and includes full integration with the VoiceOver accessibility feature.

You can download LumaScope in the App Store .
