18-year-old Ukrainian developer Artem Naumenko created ChronoTap, a physical device that is supposed to be a «place» for digital memories. You can attach photos, videos, voice messages, letters and other files to the capsule and then open them years later.
The idea came from an observation: people store thousands of digital memories, but most of them eventually get lost among tens of thousands of other files.
ChronoTap now has a digital MVP and a physical prototype. Artem plans to produce the first small production batch together with a manufacturing partner in Poland.
«For me, the most interesting part of this story is the attempt to make the physical object and the digital experience feel like one product,» the developer notes.
The first physical capsules are still taking shape. ChronoTap is in the early pre-launch stage: a digital MVP is already up and running, while physical prototypes continue to be developed.
Technologically, ChronoTap uses NFC, but Naumenko says that the main idea of the project is not to create another NFC tag that opens a website. To activate the device, you need to bring your NFC-enabled phone to the physical capsule — a digital space associated with it will open. There you can add important materials, choose who will have access, and decide whether the capsule will remain open or wait for a future date.
«The basic scenario is simple: Touch. Fill. Choose. Leave. Experience again,» says Artem.
Photos, videos, and other files are stored online, rather than directly on the NFC chip. This allows ChronoTap to hold much more than a typical NFC tag, while keeping the physical object small, simple, and durable.
You can keep the capsule for yourself for the future, give it to someone else, or open it in a few years.
No separate app is required for the basic ChronoTap experience. Simply tap the capsule with your compatible NFC-enabled smartphone and open the link that appears.
In the future, a separate app may appear for additional features, but the basic scenario will remain as simple as touching the phone to the capsule.
