“Juniors are also people who deserve decent pay, not exploitation.” The developer posts a job posting for $200-300, where, in his opinion, the company is looking for a superhero, not a rookie. His post is being hotly discussed by IT professionals

Front-end Developer Denys Stepanets posted a job opening for a Juner that has the community buzzing. The candidate is offered $200-300 in rewards, but the requirements for the developer «look like the company is looking for a superhero.»

«This is what they want from interns/juniors for $200-300. This is simply absurd! Employers in the IT sector are increasingly requiring beginners (juniors) to perform tasks and possess knowledge that are typical of mid-level (middle) or even high-level (senior) specialists. The requirements specified in this job description look as if the company is looking for a superhero, not a beginner who is just starting his career,» the specialist noted.

In his opinion, Juns are beginners who have just learned the basics. «This is simply a disregard for time and a beginner. Do you want a professional? Pay accordingly. Do you want a Jun? Then create conditions in which he can work normally and gain experience. The price of $200-300 for such requirements is not even a joke. It is an insult. Juns are also people who deserve decent pay, not exploitation. No self-respecting person would agree to work for such money,» says Denis.

He posted a screenshot of the job requirements.

The post by the IT worker is being actively discussed by the community — there are already 200 comments under it.

«I saw this vacancy, and a month later they updated the date again…», noted developer Viktoriya Svida .

Recruiter Alena Kashchuk noted: «I agree that $200-300 is not even a „cookie“. But, a June is far from a beginner, this is a person who has at least 1 year of commercial experience (maybe it’s a bit harsh, but these are modern realities). You cannot apply for the role of June immediately after completing the courses. You need to go through the trainee levels (where the main requirement is basic knowledge of understanding technologies, not experience), and then the associate level. Having already gained some experience, you can consider the position of June. This is me, so to speak, „on my toes“ in a few words, so as not to delve into recruiting and job descriptions.»

Senior Java/Scala Developer Viktor Koshevoy asks himself: «What needs to be removed to make this „inadequate“ vacancy „adequate“? Currently, I see requirements for one language, one popular framework for it, and its most important components. Be able to write tests and put it in git.»

«The trend is not new. When I was just learning Java, it was almost impossible to find a trainee vacancy, and everything labeled junior is essentially a middle beginner with a low salary. The way out is to do pet projects, study to the middle level, and „beat this rock“,» says Android developer Andriy Gerashchenko .

Oleksiy Yaroshenko, DevOps Engineer, generally offers vacancies for Juners for $200-300, but ignores them altogether. «The average salary in Ukraine is +/- $500. And you don’t need to know so many technologies there,» he argues.

«You can complain all you want, but this is the market. And what was needed for a middleman before, now they are already demanding it for a junior. And what was needed for a senior, they are already hanging it for a middleman. In principle, as expected, with the advent of artificial intelligence, the requirements for workers will increase, because it will also perform routine tasks,» said Front-end developer Oleksiy Ustinov .

Dmitry Popov, Software engineer, believes that «The requirements are for June, but only the word strong needs to be removed.» «As for the salary, it should be $500+ for June. A person will need to have a computer, then work at it for 8 hours, and before that, study for at least a year. And so, look at the requirements for June from the point of view of a team leader. What do you want to see from June as a team leader? That he writes high-quality components covered by tests and uploads it to the repository after a code review. That he is ready to learn. By the way, they haven’t added knowledge of Agile methodologies and Jira yet. I separate June and trainees.
«If you’re interested, look at the SWECOM competency system, it says who the Jun is,» he noted.

Meanwhile, attentive experts have read that this is an internship vacancy, and consider such payment to be quite adequate.

Viktor Koshevoy notes: » I’m sorry, it says at the bottom that if you successfully complete the internship, you will be able to get a full-time job as a junior. So, 200-300 bucks is an internship and not a full-time job? Not a probationary period, but an internship.»

Web Developer Bohdan Mykhailenko believes that these are quite adequate requirements for an internship. «If you know less than what is indicated here, then why even look for something and work if the basic things seem complicated?»
«There are many professions besides developer, where you need to know less,» he noted.
