“I havenʼt got a job offer for $8,000 because I’m in Ukraine.” UI/UX Designer says he didn’t get an offer because of his country of residence
Ukrainian Lead UI/UX Designer Maksym Cherednychenko said that he lost the opportunity to get a job with a salary of $8,000 per month ($96,000 per year without bonuses) because he lives in Ukraine.
Ukrainian Lead UI/UX Designer Maksym Cherednychenko said that he lost the opportunity to get a job with a salary of $8,000 per month ($96,000 per year without bonuses) because he lives in Ukraine.
«I havenʼt got a job offer for $8k ($96k annually plus bonuses) because I was in Ukraine,» he wrote.
According to the designer, this was not an ordinary selection. The initiator of the collaboration was his long-time client, with whom he worked on several projects back in 2023. «The client really wanted me to work in his new company, but it didn’t happen,» Cherednychenko wrote.
According to the specialist, the company provided a list of countries with whose employees it can cooperate for legal and operational reasons.
«I was given a list of countries… but Ukraine is in the red in all the checkboxes,» he noted.
He also published part of his correspondence with a potential employer.
The designer adds that he cannot and, according to him, does not want to leave Ukraine. At the same time, he emphasized that he does not blame either Ukraine or his employer.
«I don’t hate Ukraine and I understand businesses that don’t want to take risks,» he wrote.
At the end of the post, Cherednychenko ironically summed up his situation: «In short, you can’t find a job for $4k, but for $8k, it’s a breeze, the flight is normal.»
Under the post, other Ukrainian IT specialists also shared similar stories.
Lead Frontend Engineer Igor Khanchuk wrote that he repeatedly missed out on jobs because of his place of residence in Ukraine. «This is exactly the story of my career during the war. I missed out on an architect job at least four times,» he noted.
In response, the author of the post suggested that he could have had more such cases, but most of them the candidates simply do not know about. «I think I have flown like that more than once, because I am a man in Ukraine. But we will never know about it. I was only written to several times that business does not want to take risks — and I understand business,» Cherednychenko replied.
He also clarified that in the story with the $8,000 vacancy, the employer offered him a relocation, but he himself refused to move.
Another commentator, Software Engineer Roman Matsuev, gave an example from his own experience that he believes explains the caution of some employers. «I encountered a situation where a client accidentally hired a developer from North Korea. As a result, there was a big scandal, and now I have reduced my hiring from all over the world to two countries,» he wrote.
