A European alternative to Unreal and Unity. Guerrilla Games co-founder creates a new game engine with full AI integration

Arjan Brussé, co-founder of Guerrilla Games and former CTO of Epic Games, has begun work on a new game engine called The Immense Engine. The development is positioned as a European alternative to the popular Unreal Engine and Unity.
The developer spoke about his plans on the Dutch podcast De Technoloog. According to him, there is currently no engine on the market that is based on European servers, created exclusively by Europeans, and fully complies with local rules and regulations.
Brussé notes that the creation of 3D worlds is becoming increasingly important outside of the entertainment industry. Thanks to its European origins, The Immense Engine can be safely used for complex 3D simulations in the defense and logistics sectors.
A key feature of the new product should be an architecture built with “full integration of artificial intelligence” in mind. Brussé believes that today’s popular engines, such as Unreal, are designed for people who are used to “clicking on menus,” and making fundamental changes to such systems is too complicated. The development of technologies requires a different approach to the development of basic software.
"If you're smart enough and know how to make a good AI agent framework work, you can do the work of ten or fifteen people on your own," the developer emphasized, adding that he sees great opportunities in this as a specialist with many years of experience.
Arjan Brusse is an industry veteran, having worked as a programmer on Epic's Jazz Jackrabbit series in the 1990s and becoming a co-founder and head of production at Guerrilla Games in 2003. After working at Boss Key with Cliff Bleszinski, Brusse returned to Epic Games, where he spent eight years, including as Global Director of Product Management for Unreal Engine. He is now back in the Netherlands as a freelancer.
Previously, Unity CEO Matt Bromberg said that AI technologies will soon allow developers to create casual games using only prompts.
