According to Wired, this system was the result of an internal hackathon within the company.
Amazon shared details about the system, known as ATA, for the first time on Tuesday. The company uses it to help its security teams proactively identify vulnerabilities in online platforms, analyze options to quickly find other similar flaws, and then develop tools to fix bugs before they can be exploited by attackers.
ATA is not a single AI agent designed to comprehensively conduct security testing and threat analysis, but several specialized AI agents competing against each other in two teams.
This allows us to quickly investigate real-world methods of potential attack on the company’s services and the different ways they can be used against Amazon’s systems, and then propose security controls for human review.
It is also reported that as part of scaling the use of ATA, Amazon has developed special «high-fidelity» testing environments that are a very realistic reflection of the company’s production systems.
«Red team agents, who work to find attacks that can be used against Amazon systems, execute real commands in special ATA test environments that produce verified logs. Blue team, or defense-focused agents, use real telemetry to confirm the effectiveness of their proposed defenses,» the publication writes.
The next step, according to an Amazon representative, is to start using ATA to respond to incidents in real time.
«Artificial intelligence does all the main work behind the scenes,» states Amazon Chief Security Officer Steve Schmidt.
