Human Resources Recruiter Karina Kalinchuk sent 1,200 resumes during her year of living in the United States while looking for a job, but still could not find a decent position for herself.
«I moved to America, to Los Angeles, less than a year ago, in January. My job search here is like a real nightmare. In Ukraine, I was an HR director, and here I started working as a waitress. I didn’t have enough for a long time — the restaurant where I worked decided to cut staff while I was lying at home with a fever. So I started looking for another job,» she said on LinkedIn.
Karina adds that she found a position as a waitress in a Brazilian restaurant, which was an hour and a half commute, had a very low salary, no fixed schedule and no tips. «I decided to set myself a goal: to find a job with a schedule from Monday to Friday, without heavy physical labor, officially in an American company, where I could practice English and adapt to a new country,» she says.
After sending over 1,200 resumes and exploring different platforms, she was finally invited to interview at a good non-profit for an HR position. «During the interview, I was told that my experience in Ukraine is not important here, but they can offer me a part-time position as an administrative assistant. I gladly agreed. I began to do everything that was asked of me. Because of my restlessness and desire to do everything well or not at all, I quickly coped with my duties, for which I received thanks for doing the necessary work three times faster. Then they found free interns and said goodbye to me,» the specialist shared.
Now she is again in search.
«And here I am leaving on the last working day, smiling and crying at the same time, because I understand that every day of looking for a job is minus $100-200, which I could earn just to survive in this country. I come home, sit down at the computer and start looking for a new job. My requirements are still the same: I am ready to learn everything, I am ready to take on any job that meets my basic criteria. I’m sending out a bunch of resumes again, I tried myself on Upwork again (a great platform, I bought „contacts“ for $10, which disappeared after three vacancies). If I continue like this, I will be left without a job and on the street,» says the upset girl.
However, Karina is not going to give up. «I’ve had about 10 interviews in the last two weeks, but I just want to find a job where I can use my strengths. Give me a rod and I’ll catch you a fish. This post is not about me complaining to anyone. My post is for those who are thinking of giving up. I will go forward, and if anyone can give me some advice or know of a job that suits me, I will be very grateful,» Karina wrote.
Her post garnered more than 200 comments and more than 1,700 reactions. Residents of Aitiv are advised to find a remote job for a Ukrainian company, in order to use platforms for emigrants in the USA. Currently, the girl is still being sought.
