A new team of specialists will be formed to work at the Akademik Vernadsky Antarctic Station on Galindez Island in West Antarctica.
The State Institution "National Antarctic Science Center" of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has launched a competition to select candidates for the 31st Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition 2026–2027.
The expedition will consist of approximately seven scientists and five life support team specialists: engineers, a doctor, a cook, a diesel engineer, a mechanic, and a system administrator. The main areas of research include geology, geophysics, atmospheric physics, life sciences, and geocosmos.
The requirements for candidates include not only a high professional level and education (not lower than a master's degree), but also physical and mental endurance, and a willingness to work in an isolated environment in Antarctic conditions.
Tasks and responsibilities for a system administrator:
Ubuntu/Windows PC administration;
Proxmox (cluster) administration, Portainer;
administration of Docker containers;
understanding the layers of the OSI model
network administration based on Mikrotik, Ubiquiti, HP (Firewall, 802.3ad, 802.1q, Routing);
support and development of scripts and web applications in Python;
Zabbix, Prometheus, Grafana monitoring;
service and repair of PC components, printers;
maintaining the operability of equipment for providing satellite communications.
Required professional qualities and skills:
knowledge of the hardware part of a personal computer at the level of a service and repair service specialist
Don't be afraid to pull a twisted pair cable into a blizzard.
understanding how to assemble a RAID array
the ability to prepare working and reporting documentation that would reflect the volume of information processed, and to improve the existing system.
knowledge of elementary rules and basic skills in radio communication (HF, VHF range).
understanding how to interact with equipment via RS485
ability to independently find and fix faults
ability to explain/teach colleagues how to use services
The selection will take place in three stages: submission of documents, interview and testing, as well as passing a medical examination and training. The acceptance of documents at the first stage will last 30 calendar days from the moment of the announcement of the competition. Expedition participants will be charged a field allowance of 1800 UAH per day of stay at the station.
