Yuriy Fedorenko, commander of the 429th separate unmanned systems regiment «ACHILLES», spoke about the robotization of the front line.
The DOU publication quotes words from Yuriy Fedorenko’s speech at MITS x Azov Corps: Defense Technology Horizons 2026, where he spoke about technologies on the front line.
«In modern warfare, when drones can see everything on the front line deep enough into the battle formation, fire is immediately opened on this position — both enemy artillery and unmanned. And for a serviceman who is in one position, this is the maximum risk to life and health. So these functions are already partially performed by robotic ground systems,» said the commander of the ACHILLES regiment.
He pointed out that the NRCs perform logistical functions where pickets and armored vehicles would have previously been required. However, ground robots are being hunted by UAVs.
«One of the extremely important promising areas should be a system for automatically detecting enemy drones in the air and destroying them,» says Fedorenko.
The military explained that with such a system, a combat module is installed on the logistics NRC, for example, with a machine gun, which can detect an enemy drone through cameras and sensors and automatically open fire on it.
Yuriy Fedorenko added that such systems should also be installed on heavy bombers of the Bayraktar type and on robotic ground complexes. According to him, automatic detection and destruction systems are already being developed in Ukraine, but this requires funding.
«At the same time, it is better to spend 500 thousand on retrofitting a ship, which costs one and a half million, than to lose this one and a half million each time and the equipment worth several million more, which it delivers to that position. In addition, when the equipment does not reach the position, the position loses combat capability. That is, all this needs to be thought about now,» noted the commander of the «ACHILLES» regiment.
