The fact that Belgium has postponed the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine was announced by the country’s Prime Minister, Bart de Wever.
F-16s will be delivered to Ukraine no earlier than 2026, Bart de Wever said before a meeting with other European Union leaders in Brussels, writes «European Pravda».
The reason for the delay was the wait to receive new F-35 fighters to replace the existing F-16s.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with the Prime Minister of Belgium ahead of the EU summit. Following the meeting, Zelensky wrote on Telegram: «I thanked the government and all Belgians for the assistance provided, in particular for the decision to transfer F-16 aircraft. We appreciate these strong steps to protect Ukrainian lives.»
The President of Ukraine also reported that he informed about the preparation of a European plan for the approach of a just peace, and invited Bart de Wever to take part in the work on it. «During the negotiations, special attention was paid to defense needs. First of all, to the supply of artillery systems and shells for them, as well as investments in our, Ukrainian, production of long-range drones and missiles. They have proven their effectiveness on the front, and we must strengthen this advantage together. We also discussed Ukraine’s integration into the EU,» Zelensky added.
Against the backdrop of restrictions on military aid and intelligence sharing for Ukraine, announced recently in the United States, Europe has proposed a plan to protect the skies over Ukraine, «Sky Shield,» developed by military experts, which could stop Russian missile attacks and would operate separately from NATO.
