As TechSpot reports, on the morning of July 30, employees received a video message from CEO and co-founder Mike Cannon-Brooks, in which he announced the restructuring of the customer support department. Within 15 minutes of the broadcast, those affected by the cuts received letters in their mailboxes and their work laptops were turned off. Many of the reduced roles are to be automated using AI.
The video, titled «Restructuring the CSS Team: A Difficult Decision for Our Future,» did not name the fired employees or provide any individual consequences. Instead, it told employees to expect personalized letters. Those who were fired were promised compensation of six months’ salary.
However, it was the form of the message that caused the most outrage. Atlassian, which positions itself as a transparent and open company, chose the most distant approach at the most vulnerable moment for its people. HR specialists note that such «unified communication» is unacceptable in situations where the life circumstances of employees are at stake. Lawyers add that such a practice may be questionable from a legal point of view, especially in the UK.
Amid the cuts, Atlassian continues to actively integrate artificial intelligence into its products. The company’s former co-CEO Scott Farquhar publicly stated on the same day that AI will be a driver of economic change in Australia and should be used «everyday and everywhere.»
This is one of the most famous developers of enterprise software (Jira, Trello, etc.). This is not the first time the company has resorted to mass layoffs. In 2023, it has already laid off about 500 employees. This time the trend is even more alarming: some people are being replaced by machines, and the message about this is delivered by a soulless recording. This trend raises questions not only about ethics, but also about the legal and strategic consequences for the entire IT sector.
