Five classrooms will operate on the second floor of the cultural center, and during air raids, children and teachers will be able to continue lessons in an underground center with play areas in a shelter, the press release notes.
On the first floor of the temporary school, there is an educational center «Vulyk» for extracurricular activities of schoolchildren. In particular, there, students will be able to attend a scientific and research circle in the STEM format. For this purpose, the space has devices for 3D modeling, robotics, biotechnology and the creation of chemical projects. Before the creation of the educational space, schoolchildren in Olshansky had been studying remotely since 2022 due to the tense security situation and the lack of shelter in the local lyceum.
«The opportunity to conduct full-fledged offline classes is a big event for us, because for the fourth year in a row our children have been seeing teachers and peers in lessons through laptop screens… But the biggest challenge now is the socialization of schoolchildren. They need to learn how to interact in the classroom,» said Iryna Budykina, director of the Olshansky Lyceum.
The renovation and arrangement of the educational areas in the cultural center with the support of EPAM cost over 3 million hryvnias. In addition, some work was carried out at the expense of the community. In the future, the local authorities plan to continue the renovation and arrangement of several more classrooms of the temporary school in the cultural center.
«War takes away the opportunity for children to study in normal conditions. According to the Ministry of Education and Science, more than 300 schools have been completely destroyed, and more than 3,700 have been damaged. These are not just numbers — these are destroyed children’s dreams and a challenge for the future of the country… Perhaps right now, among the students of the school in Olshansky, there are our future colleagues — those who will create the latest technologies for the restoration and protection of Ukraine,» commented Dmytro Yakymets, Head of ESG Projects at EPAM Ukraine.
According to the Ministry of Education and Science, in the Mykolaiv region, more than 12,000 fewer children are studying exclusively remotely in the new academic year than in the spring of 2025.
