“Copilot and Agent Mode keep you in the creative zone and allow you to truly focus,” GitHub CEO on the impact of AI on developer work and why it’s just another tool

"My creativity during the coding process is limited by the time I have and the energy I have — the amount of distractions I get. Developers often describe this as a state of magical flow. You're almost in the zone of creating something, and as long as you're not distracted, you really feel like you're getting a lot done," GitHub CEO Thomas Domke said in an interview with Azeem Azhar on YouTube, Business Insider reports .

According to Domke, the assistance of artificial intelligence agents will make it much easier to achieve and maintain this “flow state.”

“Then there’s a point where you finish a feature or you get distracted and now you’re out of the zone and have to find it later,” he says. “I think Copilot and Agent Mode keep you in that creative zone and allow you to really focus.”

“A lot of time as a developer is spent every day… actually, on the production side of the creative process,” Domke said. “That’s often the most boring part for a lot of developers. That’s where automation is great, because I actually want to spend more time on the creative side — ultimately, developing what I’m delivering to my customers.”

Domke also said that AI isn't that much of a departure from the existing coding process. Ultimately, he believes it's just another tool.

"Most engineers today actually start with code written by others," he said. "They use open source libraries, they use open source operating systems, they have an editor that they don't build themselves, a debugger, and a compiler."

Even with the help of an AI assistant, engineers still need to understand the fundamental processes underlying their work, Domke said — AI simply changes the way it is done.

“We’re already assembling the different pieces into software, and we’re moving towards abstraction,” he said. “AI will help us achieve that, and then we’ll analyze the AI’s performance to make sure it’s safe, compliant, and working effectively.”

In essence, Domke doesn't believe that the software engineering profession will really change.

"I think a developer will mostly do what engineers actually do and how they define themselves, which is solve problems," he said. "They implement ideas."

There are many concerns about the potential for AI to replace or impact IT jobs, but not everyone is pessimistic. For example, Amazon’s AI chief recently said that early-stage developers have more to gain from AI than they have to lose .
