To date, the ChatGPT mobile app has brought OpenAI $2 billion, or $2.91 per install.
Since its launch in May 2023, consumer spending on the ChatGPT app for iOS and Android has reached $2 billion worldwide. That’s about 30 times more than the total spending on mobile apps from competitors, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
Since its launch in May 2023, consumer spending on the ChatGPT app for iOS and Android has reached $2 billion worldwide. That’s about 30 times more than the total spending on mobile apps from competitors, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
This is according to an analysis conducted by app analytics provider Appfigures, TechCrunch reports .
Since the beginning of this year, the ChatGPT application has brought in $21.35 billion, which is 673% more than in January-July 2024 — then this amount was $174 million.
On average, the app generates about $193 million per month, compared to $25 million last year.
This is about 53 times higher than ChatGPT’s next closest competitor, Grok, which has earned approximately $25.6 million since the beginning of the year. Grok’s average monthly consumer spend is estimated at $3.6 million, or 1,9% of ChatGPT.
It’s worth noting that when Grok by xAI launched in November 2023 (after ChatGPT), it initially didn’t have separate iOS or Android apps. Instead, users interacted with the chatbot through the X platform. Grok only became available on mobile devices via its own iOS app in early January 2025, and on Google Play on March 4.
With all that said, according to Appfigures, ChatGPT’s global all-time download costs are $2.91 compared to $2.55 for Claude, $0.75 for Grok, and $0.28 for Copilot.
In the US, ChatGPT’s cost per download is currently even higher at $10, leading to the market accounting for 38% of the app’s revenue to date. Germany is the second largest market, accounting for 5,3% of ChatGPT’s total all-time spend.
ChatGPT is also the leader in downloads. To date, the app has been installed approximately 690 million times worldwide, compared to Grok’s 39.5 million. (This better explains X owner Elon Musk’s recent complaints about the App Store’s alleged favoritism towards ChatGPT in its top charts.)
The average number of monthly ChatGPT downloads worldwide is now approximately 45 million, up 180% from approximately 16 million in January-July 2024.
In 2025, the ChatGPT app was downloaded 318 million times, which is 2.8 times more than the 113 million in the same period last year. However, India leads in terms of installs, accounting for 13,7% of all downloads, while the US is in second place with 10,3% of the total.
