The State Service for Special Communications reported that the shortage of professional cybersecurity professionals in Ukraine could reach 100,000 specialists. Where do they plan to look for specialists?

Head of the State Special Communications Service, Oleksandr Potiy, during a presentation of the institution’s activities as part of a meeting with members of the US-Ukraine Business Council (USUBC), a non-governmental business and trade association headquartered in Washington, reported on the development of the cybersecurity system during the public-private partnership.

«The shortage of professional personnel dealing with information protection and cyber security in Ukraine, according to various estimates, may reach one hundred thousand people,» said the head of the State Special Communications Service. At the same time, he emphasized the problem, which is based on the fact that although Ukrainian universities graduate thousands of specialists every year, they do not have professional certificates, so no one can confirm their qualification level.

Oleksandr Potiy also reported on the development of a system of cyber defense centers, which should unite into a single network both relevant state institutions and private computer incident response teams and operational cyber incident response centers. He also noted that it is planned to expand the capabilities for providing information protection and preservation services, and to form a professional community.

Currently, Ukraine has a single «Qualification Center for Information Technologies and Cybersecurity». However, according to a representative of the State Special Communications Service, a network of such centers throughout the country is needed to fully ensure the assessment of the level of knowledge of specialists. And we are talking not only about state institutions, but also about the development of private structures in the field of cybersecurity. Therefore, the State Special Communications Service calls on businesses to join this process, obtain accreditation and provide services for professional certification of specialists, as well as become part of the state system in the field of cyberspace protection.

«We want not only state institutions to create such teams and centers. To ensure the cyber resilience of the entire state, it is necessary for every link to be protected, and for business to also join this process. The State Service for Special Communications, as a regulator in this area, is ready to provide maximum support and coordination to both state institutions and private companies,» Oleksandr Potiy emphasized.

In turn, Deputy Head of the State Special Communications Service Volodymyr Trofymenko also drew attention to the concern of partners from different countries about the possibility of the expansion of multi-vector threats to other countries, primarily European ones.
