According to the game's Steam description, the new game returns the franchise to its roots in the European Middle Ages, with a focus on simulating the complex life of a castle. The main story campaign, consisting of 22 missions, will tell the story of a simple shepherd Penryn of Bethel. Players will have to go with him on his way from an ordinary peasant to a leader who leads troops into battle.
The studio has enlisted well-known actors to voice the characters, including Ben Starr, Samantha Beart, Wallace Amond, and Harry McIntyre. The music is traditionally composed by Robert L. Evvino, the composer of the original games in the series.
Stronghold 4 focuses on updated survival mechanics and interaction with the environment. The developers have integrated a dynamic weather system into the gameplay, which directly affects tactics and the castle economy. For example, snow will stop the growth of crops, and heavy rain will reduce the shooting range of archers. For successful defense, players will have to use both classic ditches and tunnels, as well as new tactical structures.
In addition to the military component, players will have to manage the internal processes of the settlement: finding a balance between collecting taxes, providing provisions and the level of popularity among the population. At launch, the game will also offer a fully functional battle mode (Skirmish) with eight computer opponents, as well as modes for solitary play, such as "Free Construction".
The original Stronghold game was released in 2001 and became one of the most prominent strategy games of its time, successfully combining a deep economic city-building simulation with military tactics. Since then, the series has received a number of sequels and spinoffs (the most popular of which is Stronghold Crusader).
In recent years, the developers have experimented with an Asian setting in Stronghold: Warlords and released remasters of the first parts, but the fan community has long asked the studio to create a full-fledged new game in the classic setting of medieval England.
