As The Verge notes, Elon Musk was probably trying to restore his reputation as a gamer after admitting to cheating on his Path of Exile 2 account. To do this, he streamed the game during the flight, demonstrating the «smooth operation» of his Starlink satellite internet.
But during the broadcast, he was bombarded with messages from viewers mocking him for his work on the collapse of the US government and his turbulent personal life.
The stream, which is still available to watch on X (Twitter), lasted about 1 hour and 45 minutes, during which Musk himself rarely spoke. He mostly stared silently and sadly into the camera as he played through the game’s early levels. He died several times during the stream, forcing him to create new characters because he was playing on the hardcore difficulty setting, which involves permanent character death.
Within minutes of the stream starting, Musk began receiving messages from other players. Some were celebratory, calling him a «gamer god,» but the messages quickly turned to spam and then insults.
Less than five minutes into the broadcast, a player joined the stream and asked Musk if he could «f**k Mr. Trump so he dies of a heart attack.» For the next hour and a half, Musk sat stone-faced and listened to techno music while dozens of users with names like ELON_IS_A_PEEDOPHILE and ELON_MUSK_IS_PATHETIC flooded the chat with messages like, «You have no friends and you’re going to die alone» and «You’re always going to feel insecure and it’s never going to go away.»
Some commentators claimed to be Ashley St. Clair, Musk’s former partner, who is currently fighting with him for custody of their five-month-old child. They wrote that the chat was their only way to contact Musk and asked him to pay child support.
«There are a lot of ret**rds in the chat», — Musk said at one point, using a slur. But beyond banning a few of the most outspoken trolls, he made no attempt to stem the flow of hate that was being broadcast in the chat.
In the final minutes of the stream, Musk created a character he named Kekius Maximus (a 4chan-esque nickname he used for his X account). But he, too, did not survive long in the game world, dying during one of the game’s tutorial bosses due to a poor connection. Musk’s stream ended abruptly shortly after.
Previously, players drew attention to the high positions in the Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 leaderboards of Elon Musk’s accounts and doubted that he had actually played them for hundreds of hours, as he gets confused about elementary game mechanics on streams.
Musk later admitted that he had given other people access to his Path of Exile 2 account so that they could level it up. In PoE 2, such account sharing is prohibited, and Musk’s account would have been blocked.
