Google has made changes over the past few years to streamline the company and make it more efficient, including a 10% reduction in managers, directors, and vice presidents, Business Insider reports, citing an internal source at the company. According to the report, some of these roles have been replaced with non-management positions, while others have been eliminated entirely.
The impetus for Google to improve its efficiency was the emergence of new products from OpenAI. In early November, it became known that ChatGPT had a search engine that allows something like «googling» information. At the end of November, information appeared that OpenAI wants to launch its own browser to compete with Google. And recently, ChatGPT Search became available in a free version and with advanced features.
Instead, Google has implemented and launched a number of generative AI features. For example, they added a new AI video generator that outperformed OpenAI in early testing, and a new set of Gemini models, including the Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental AI model that can «think.»
During Wednesday’s meeting, Pichai also explained the meaning of the word «Googleyness,» telling employees that the word needs an update for modern Google.
