OpenAI has launched an autonomous web translation tool, ChatGPT Translate, which supports over 50 languages and is positioned as a direct competitor to Google Translate. Because it does not officially support Ukrainian, the service crashes for users with Ukrainian-language browsers.

Visually, ChatGPT Translate resembles Google’s service. It also has two text fields — one for entering or pasting the source text, and the other for displaying the translated result. There is also a menu for selecting translation languages.
However, Google Translate allows users to upload images, documents, and even websites for translation, in addition to regular text input. The ChatGPT Translate homepage states that it can translate text, images, and voice, but image support is not yet available in any version of the service, The Verge notes .
The desktop web version only supports text translation, while mobile browsers allow you to use both text and your device’s microphone. OpenAI also includes some additional presets to control the style of the finished translation, such as «translate this and make it more formal.»
The regular ChatGPT chatbot has supported translation features for years, so OpenAI simply released it as a dedicated web service. There is currently no standalone ChatGPT Translate app in the Apple or Google app stores, unlike Google Translate, which is available as both a website and an app.
Currently, the service does not work in Ukraine even with a VPN if the user has Ukrainian language selected in the browser. Upon detecting Ukrainian, ChatGPT Translate tries to redirect the user to https://chatgpt.com/uk-UA/translate/, which is a link to a language pair translation that is currently not supported. As a result, the site gives the error «Host chatgpt.com redirected you too many times.»
Despite this, the service supports translation from Ukrainian. OpenAI has not yet made any announcements about the release or confirmed which artificial intelligence model powers the translation tool. Perhaps with the official announcement, support for the Ukrainian language will also appear in the service.
