"The ability to get into a group chat for secret military operations". Signal founder promoted his messenger against the backdrop of the data leak scandal in the US
Signal founder Moxie Marlinspike mocked a leaked military group chat that U.S. President Donald Trump’s national security adviser Mike Walz accidentally added to the mainstream publication The Atlantic. In his post, Marlinspike ironically promoted Signal.
Signal founder Moxie Marlinspike mocked a leaked military group chat that U.S. President Donald Trump’s national security adviser Mike Walz accidentally added to the mainstream publication The Atlantic. In his post, Marlinspike ironically promoted Signal.
Moxie Marlinspike, whose real name is Matthew Rosenfeld, mocked the leak of sensitive information from a Signal group chat called the «Houthi PC small group» that included senior US officials. There, they coordinated the tasks of military strikes against the Houthis in Yemen.
«There are so many great reasons to be on Signal. Now is the chance for the Vice President of the United States of America to randomly add you to a group chat to coordinate sensitive military operations. Don’t miss out,» the Signal founder and former CEO wrote in his post.
There are so many great reasons to be on Signal.
Now including the opportunity for the vice president of the United States of America to randomly add you to a group chat for coordination of sensitive military operations.
The «PC» in the name stood for principal committee, and the chat consisted primarily of senior US officials, including Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The chat participants were discussing upcoming strikes on Yemen’s Houthi rebels, Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, reported in his article. US President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Walz, took full responsibility for adding him to the chat.
Marlinspike wasn’t the only social media user to mock the incident. However, comments on his post were mixed, with some blaming officials for making mistakes and others saying the platform needed to improve its security. Signal wrote in a post on X (Twitter) on Tuesday that «misinformation is circulating that could turn people away from Signal and private communications.»
In its post, Signal cited a report of a Pentagon email dated March 18 warning employees about a potential Signal vulnerability.
«The note used the term ‘vulnerability’ in reference to Signal, but it had nothing to do with Signal’s core technologies. It was a warning about phishing attacks targeting Signal users,» the company said.
Signal pointed out that phishing is nothing new, and it is not a flaw in their encryption or any of the technology behind Signal.
Recall that recently, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine accused the Signal messenger of inaction in the face of Russian cyber threats, which complicates the fight against enemy attacks. The corresponding statement was made by Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Serhiy Demedyuk during an international forum on cybersecurity.
Earlier, dev.ua reported that Signal fever has not bypassed Ukrainian high-ranking officials. When asked what messenger the representatives of the National Security and Defense Council and the General Staff use, one of the Verkhovna Rada deputies, who wished to remain anonymous, succinctly answered dev.ua: «Signal.»
«I know of cases where the accounts of our generals were hacked,» our interlocutor added.
