"HR-schematosis on the despair of IT workers": Software Engineer claims that behind the mass rejection of candidates is a scheme of HR and recruiters who earn money from career consultations

Senior Software Engineer Ihor Malovanyi told about a scheme that supposedly exists in Ukrainian IT, where HR and recruiters make money on IT professionals who cannot find work for a long time.

As Ihor Malovanyi noted in his LinkedIn post, there are a lot of vacancies on the IT market, but finding a job is becoming more difficult: IT professionals will increasingly receive automatic rejections, without live communication. At the same time, HR and recruiters are increasingly offering career consulting and resume editing services.

The IT specialist claims that there is a scheme that involves mass rejection of candidates, so that they then turn to HR and recruiters who earn money from consultations. An HR friend from an agency told him about this. The IT specialist called this scheme «HR-schematosis of despair.»

«I recently talked to a person who sees the scheme from the inside (HR from an agency where such a scheme is a purposeful practice). I actually didn’t plan to talk about it, but in the context of my «it’s strange, how is it possible that there are vacancies, but candidates with great CVs get auto-rejections? Are the algorithms inadequate?», he replied: «not the algorithms, that’s the goal.» And he told a little «inside information,» Ihor Malovanyi wrote.

How the scheme probably works

According to Software Engineer, the mass rejections are planned: «This is a policy aimed at increasing disbelief.»

Meanwhile, HR and recruiters, who have a large social media reach and a network of contacts, are actively promoting the idea: «Your CV is bad, for $200 we will make it great. And they actively support these calls with success stories of candidate clients,» the IT expert writes.

Then the candidate pays money. «HR runs his CV through ChatGPT (mostly). Occasionally communicates with the candidate, learns information about him in a relaxed atmosphere.»

If the candidate is «so-so» (software/skills are not very good, or views are destructive, etc.), he only gets a CV, claims Ihor Malovanyi. But if the candidate is «right», in addition to the CV, he also gets «a recommendation to the contact network of other HR/colleagues/CEOs/etc., which will lead to a hidden run of the candidate through a referral of a certain company (for which everyone involved in the scheme will get their 100-500-1000+ dollars).»

In fact, the scheme is an advanced version of nepotism and/or bribery, based on distrust and desperation.

Maliovany believes that this approach leads to the fact that:

  • HR will receive «guaranteed $200 + potential $100-500-1000+ per referral»;
  • companies — simplified and higher-quality selection of candidates;
  • candidates who have paid have additional opportunities that they are unaware of, but «which will then be used as the basis for a cool story about how consultations work well»;
  • for other candidates — «the search is a pain, constant wanderings about «something is wrong with me», «my CV is bad», «we need to lower the price»."

But the IT expert emphasizes: «NOT EVERYONE who provides such consultations or rejects candidates are participants in the scheme. This is worth being soberly aware of. But MANY consultant-coaches are indeed part of something like this.»

According to Ihor Malovanyi, there is no solution to this situation yet.

«In fact, stronger market regulation and working laws could significantly improve the situation. But while some monkeys are absolutely seriously justifying the need to maintain blacklists (there are actually woodpeckers who don’t see the problem) — we are unfortunately far from more advanced regulations and self-awareness,» the Software Engineer concluded.

“We stopped considering candidates because of the large pool.” The developer told how the recruiter rejected him before they even looked at his resume. Is the situation on the labor market really that complicated: IT professionals debate
