Gennady Butkevych’s BGV company successfully tested a research sample of anode material for a lithium-ion battery made from Ukrainian graphite.

The company’s press service said in a statement that the results of electrochemical performance testing are at the highest level of world standards.

A prototype of a standard lithium coin battery with a diameter of 20 mm and a thickness of 1.6 mm was tested. It is used in laboratory conditions to test new anode and cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. Graphite spheroidization was carried out in October 2024 at the facilities of the German company NETZSCH.

The basis for the anode was spherical graphite obtained from the enriched concentrate of the Balakhiv deposit in the Kirovohrad region. A sample of the anode material was manufactured at the Department of Chemical Technologies and Resource Conservation of the Kyiv National University of Technology and Design.

The next step will be to develop a full-fledged two-electrode battery prototype.

«We are consistently moving towards the formation of a complete chain of lithium-ion batteries in Ukraine — from raw material extraction to the manufacture of power cells. Current laboratory testing is an important technological stage. We plan to manufacture it in the fall of 2025 based on graphite mined by BGV,» said Viktor Tanay, head of the BGV Graphite project.
