The use of generative artificial intelligence during job searches has long become commonplace. However, the line between effective use of tools and banal cheating at interviews is sometimes blurred. Oleg Yashchuk, Senior AI Solution Architect and co-founder of the AI solutions development company RemiLink, spoke about one such episode.

"We figured it out in 5 minutes": the story of one interview

During one of the technical interviews, a candidate came to RemiLink and initially made a great first impression. She confidently talked about her previous experience, but as soon as the technical questions began, her behavior changed dramatically.

“During technical questions, her eyes began to dart around, and each answer began after a 3–5 second awkward pause. We counted her out in 5 minutes. And that was +1 to the piggy bank of cringe episodes in my interview practice,” Oleg Yashchuk shares on LinkedIn.

The situation quickly became tense for both sides. According to the developer, a sense of “Spanish shame” gripped everyone on the call.

"It seemed like everyone had figured it out. We were ashamed of her, she was ashamed of herself, and we all just wanted this call to end as soon as possible. My interviewer partner actually apologized and left the call, writing in DM that he wasn't going to tolerate such disrespect."

Oleg emphasizes that the most disappointing thing about this story is that the candidate really had the necessary knowledge. If she had gone through the interview on her own, she could have easily received an offer.

"Slump Cheater's Guide"

Considering how often candidates try to "stupidly" use hints from neural networks, Oleg Yashchuk, with a touch of irony, created a conditional "real guide for a real interview cheater."

  • A quality setup: good lighting, a quality camera, and a microphone automatically increase your level of trust and attract attention.

  • Real-time AI assistants: using specialized services like Cluely, Vysper, Final Round AI or open solutions like OpenCluely, which listen to the interviewer in real time and generate answers.

  • Teleprompter: installing a special teleprompter on the camera and displaying a window with AI chat there so that the candidate can look directly into the lens, rather than looking away.

  • Protection during screen sharing: using paid services that hide the AI-tips window when sharing the screen.

  • Timely retreat: "If you start to blush or have the slightest suspicion that you've been exposed, turn everything off and continue answering yourself. You can do it, believe in yourself!", advises Oleg.

Why honesty always wins

Despite the existence of dozens of interview bypassing tools, Oleg Yashchuk urges candidates to focus only on the first item on this list — investing in picture and sound quality.

"It's better to stop at a point with a high-quality setup. This will give a megaboost! Everyone is pleased to see a person with a good picture and sound and work with them every day. And if it's a customer-facing role, then it's a staple."

The main risk of using AI during an interview is not just rejection from the job, but a complete loss of reputation in the market.

"Remember: as soon as the interviewer suspects something, the trust is gone. You won't see the offer and, worse, you will damage your own reputation. It's better to do everything honestly - your mental state will thank you, and in the long run, honesty is always a winning strategy."
