At the end of 2024, two victims — a 56-year-old and a 35-year-old local resident — contacted the police. They noticed the disappearance of their digital assets and suspected fraud. Investigators determined that their acquaintance, who worked in the IT sector, was involved. This was reported by the Zhytomyr regional police.
One of the victims contacted a “consultant” to create a crypto wallet, and the other to recover a password. Having gained access to the clients’ devices and their confidential information, the fraudster transferred the funds to other accounts and later used them. The total amount of stolen cryptocurrency in hryvnia equivalent exceeds 3.7 million.
The defendant is charged with committing criminal offenses under Part 4, Part 5 of Article 190 (Fraud), Part 1, Part 5 of Article 361 (Unauthorized interference in the operation of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks) and Part 2 of Article 200 (Illegal actions with transfer documents, payment cards and other means of access to bank accounts, electronic money, equipment for their production) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The perpetrator faces up to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
