“If you do well, you might end up in our IT department.” Developer tells how he almost ended up in the “IT department” of a fraudulent call center

Frontend Developer Kirill Gordeev told how he almost got a job in the IT department of a call center that was involved in fraud.

«A story about how I almost ended up in the „IT department“ of a fraudulent call center. I decided to share a recent situation — perhaps it will warn some of the beginners in IT. I have a resume posted on Work.ua for the position of Frontend Developer. Yesterday, an HR manager called me and said that their company had such a vacancy. I started asking questions: what project, stack, how many people are in the team. The answers were vague, but overall they sounded convincing — and I agreed to come for an interview at the office in Dnipro,» the IT professional said.

According to Kirill, he had some suspicions that this was not exactly an IT company, but there was still hope.

«A girl met me on the spot, asked about my experience, and then said that «one year is not enough, no one will hire you for frontend.» And she immediately offered me a job as a «manager» — that is, calling people and «convincing» them (in other words, engaging in pushy sales, often of a dubious nature). In addition, she said:
«If you do well, you might end up in our IT department.» I thanked him and ended the conversation with the words: «Don’t waste your time or mine. Goodbye,» the developer shared.

He advises those looking for their first job in IT to be careful. «In Dnipro (and not only) there are still call centers that masquerade as IT companies. They look for newcomers and lure them with „prospects“ that turn out to be fraudulent schemes,» the IT expert explains.

He advises checking the company: Google the address, read reviews, the website and social networks. «If there are no specifics, that’s a signal. Listen to yourself. If something seems suspicious, it’s better to ask again or refuse. Your time and reputation are more important. Don’t give up. There are enough honest companies and decent people in the industry. Just make your choice carefully,» the developer shared his advice.

Java developer Maksym Ostrozhynskyi, in turn, said that he encountered the same situation, only it was a Java junior dev position in Kyiv. «They explained everything well on the phone, and the next day, in the morning I went to them and it was the same scam. They also said that IT in Ukraine is everything and it is already unrealistic to find a job for beginners. The vacancy was found on the website robota.ua, I do not advise anyone to look for a job on work.ua or robota.ua, almost everything there is a scam (very rarely something decent comes out). You can only waste time,» he wrote in the comments to Kirill’s post.

Work.ua claims that the company’s moderation department blocks over 10,000 scam accounts every month. «This is a real epidemic. But some of them still leak onto the site.»
