Former Google employees created an AI assistant that lives in a smartphone and always listens to its owner: how TwinMind works and what are its benefits

Founded by ex-Googlers, the startup has developed TwinMind, an AI-based app — an assistant that runs in the background on a phone and learns about users' lives, then helps with various tasks without having to add a ton of extra context.
TwinMind founder Daniel George told Business Insider that the company raised more than $2.5 million in two rounds this year. After investments, the startup was valued at $30 million.
According to George, Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT cannot understand what is happening in users' lives.
How TwinMind works
The application works in the background of the phone and continuously listens to its owner. It stores the audio and transcribes it into text, which enters the TwinMind memory bank. Users can then open the app and see a report of their day, broken down into key moments.
You can ask TwinMind questions without having to add context, as the AI studies users throughout the day: what they did, who they spent the day with, etc.
The startup also launches a web browser extension that (with the user's permission) will see what is viewed on the Internet and record it in memory. Thanks to integration with calendars and Gmail, users can also ask TwinMind to create drafts of emails. Of course, this can already be done with other chatbots, but the advantage of TwinMind is that it uses all the user's memory.
TwinMind does most of its processing locally on the phone and connects to the cloud if it needs to answer a question or if the user wants enhanced AI.
TwinMind offers a free version of the program with a $20 per month subscription for users who want access to more advanced large language models.
George said that because TwinMind doesn't capture images, but only decodes audio, it falls into the same category of assistants as Siri or Alexa.
TwinMind can run for 12 hours in the background continuously before the battery dies.
First testing and plans
The startup hopes to raise at least $5 million in investment. There are also plans to make the transition between phone and computer smoother so that TwinMind feels more integrated into users' lives.
More than 2,000 early testers have already provided feedback, and the team is launching the app this week on Product Hunt. It will initially be available for iPhone and as a Chrome extension, with Android and Mac apps coming next year.
