After the increase in tariffs at Kyivstar and Vodafone, tens of thousands of subscribers applied to switch to lifecell. This overloaded the Centralized Database
Mobile operator lifecell reported that this week it recorded a significant increase in the number of people wishing to port their numbers to it from other operators. There were so many of them that it significantly exceeded the technical capabilities of the Centralized Database, which is administered by the Ukrainian State Center for Radio Frequencies.
This is stated in a message from lifecell, which was received by the dev.ua editorial office. The number of applications for number porting and the number of visitors to the company's stores who intended to port their number to lifecell "has increased significantly."
Forbes Ukraine has provided more precise figures on how many users wanted to port their numbers. According to the publication, these are over 10,000 Kyivstar subscribers and over 2,800 Vodafone Ukraine subscribers.
This exceeded the planned throughput capacity of the Centralized Database systems, which processes number portability applications. "This almost four times exceeded the average daily load on the Centralized Database for the entire time the System has been operating," commented the UDC, which administers this database.
The National Commission for State Regulation of Electronic Communications (NCEC) announced an unscheduled suspension of the Central Database for 6 hours on December 20, 2024 to conduct technical work and significantly increase the bandwidth of the Central Database.
"There are no technical problems related to the number portability (MNP) process on the part of lifecell. The company continues to accept applications from subscribers who plan to port their numbers to the operator. They will be processed by the Central Data Center after work is resumed. On its side, lifecell is always ready to process all portability applications as soon as possible in order to accept new subscribers to the network," the company assured.
Why subscribers switch to lifecell
Apparently, this was facilitated by news about tariff increases from other mobile operators. Lifecell, on the other hand, has not yet announced such intentions. In addition, the company has the smallest average check for its services among its competitors.
In early December , Kyivstar announced a 25% price increase for its tariffs . The company assured that subscribers would receive more benefits and services in the tariff: additional minutes for calls to other networks, additional gigabytes of mobile Internet, and the ability to connect additional unlimited services.
Ukrtelecom also announced an increase in the price of services. The company is increasing tariffs for fixed telephone and cable radio services. Thus, from January 1, the cost of the "Simple" package will increase from 195 to 255 UAH per month. The "Simple Minimum" tariff will increase from 195 to 249 UAH per month.
Recently, notices about the increase in tariffs from December 24, 2024 also appeared on the website of the mobile operator Vodafone. Later, the company explained that the tariff increase will actually be postponed by 3 months.
According to NKEC , in the third quarter of 2024, Ukrainian mobile operators received an average of UAH 112 per subscriber per month.
The average bill for mobile services among operators in Ukraine in the second half of 2024 was as follows:
“The pioneer will collect all the negativity. If others use this correctly, they will be able to increase their subscriber base and, perhaps, demand a smaller increase,” warned the head of the analytical department of Concorde Capital, Oleksandr Parashchiy, in a comment to Forbes.
Kyivstar, Vodafone Ukraine, and lifecell are testing solar power plants in certain regions. Will this solution help maintain a stable network for 10 hours?
