TechRadar reports on the changes. According to the publication, the initiative applies to users from the EU/EEA, Switzerland, Canada and Hong Kong. Data from minors will not be used to train models. Users will be able to opt out of using their data through the Data for Generative AI Improvement settings, but opting out will only affect future data collection and information collected up until the opt-out will remain in the training environment.
In an official statement, LinkedIn clarifies that it relies on the legal basis of «legitimate interest» for such processing and separately describes how the company uses AI and which models it improves using user data.
There are two ways to limit the use of your data. First, turn off the Data for Generative AI Improvement toggle in the Data privacy → How LinkedIn uses your data section. Second, if you want to object to training other (non-generative) models, LinkedIn recommends submitting a request via the Data Processing Objection form. Both options are described on the support pages.
European and British regulators have been pushing for transparency in AI data usage in recent years. In the wake of complaints and lawsuits, platforms have gradually introduced clearer opt-out mechanisms, but often leave data collection as the default with an opt-out option, as Meta and other players have already done.
LinkedIn emphasizes that the «legitimate interest» approach is legal and that private messages are not used for training; however, users should check their own settings and decide how much access their data has to AI models.
