Billionaire Elon Musk launched Grokipedia in October after years of accusing Wikipedia of left-wing bias. He calls it «the world’s largest and most accurate source of knowledge for humans and artificial intelligence, with no restrictions on use.»
Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales said he had only looked at Grokipedia «a little bit» but was not surprised by the negative reaction the service had provoked.
«I’m not sure anyone would trust an encyclopedia that has a biased attitude,» he noted.
According to the Wikipedia co-founder, when he doesn’t like something about the service, he starts a dialogue. Musk, on the other hand, according to Wales, would rather start changing what he doesn’t like.
Elon Musk is indeed known for interfering in the details of his companies’ operations and making top-down decisions. During the Twitter acquisition, Musk ordered the social platform’s algorithm to prioritize his own posts, former X employees said.
Jimmy Wales also commented on using Grok, a large xAI language model, to write and edit articles.
«I use large language models a lot and I know about the hallucination problem, I see it all the time. Large language models are really not good enough for writing an encyclopedia,» he said.
Previously, users found that some Grokipedia pages were almost identical to Wikipedia articles and sometimes «coincided with Elon Musk’s political views.» Musk himself called the encyclopedia «a modern-day Library of Alexandria» and said that he wants to send it into deep space eventually.
Since November, Grokipedia has moved from «v0.1» to «v0.2.» The total number of articles has increased to 1,089,057, compared to 885,279 at launch. However, Grokipedia does not have a Ukrainian-language version, and if you type the word «Ukraine,» the site shows 36 results in English only.
Recall that Wales and Musk have a long history of disputes. Previously, the owner of X (Twitter) offered a billion dollars to rename Wikipedia to Dickipedia and wondered why the Wikimedia Foundation needed millions of dollars to support it. Before that, Wales criticized Musk for censoring critics of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of crucial elections. Musk complied with Turkey’s demands to restrict content, which Wales did not like.
