GPS disappeared, but you need to go? Ukrainians created a LOST application with voice control that guides you along a route without a satellite signal - very useful during emergencies

In Ukraine, a LOST navigator has been created that helps drivers navigate the road when GPS is not working, is jammed, or shows the wrong location. Instead of satellite coordinates, the application calculates an approximate position based on a given speed and travel time. It is available for free for iPhone and can work without the Internet if the route has already been mapped.

The developers say they created LOST after their own experience traveling with unstable GPS. The problem is especially noticeable in Ukrainian cities during airstrikes, when conventional navigators can show a car kilometers away from its actual location.

How navigation works without GPS

LOST doesn’t determine the car’s exact coordinates instead of satellites. It uses a different approach: the driver chooses a route and sets a speed, and the app calculates how far the car should travel in a given time.

First, you need to select a city, specify the starting and ending points — by address or directly on the map. After that, the application offers up to three route options: the fastest, with fewer turns, or an alternative route.

While driving, LOST continues to guide the driver along the selected route, showing the next turns, the distance to them, the estimated time of arrival and the lanes before maneuvers.

Since the application does not receive precise coordinates via GPS, its position may gradually deviate from the real one. Therefore, the developers have provided for manual correction: the driver can move the mark on the map 100 meters forward or backward, indicate that he has already passed a turn, or report that he is at a traffic light.

"STOP" and "GO": how to control the navigator with your voice

Another feature of LOST is the ability to control navigation by voice. The driver can say "STOP" when stopped at a traffic light or in a traffic jam, and "GO" when traffic resumes.

These commands are needed so that the application does not continue to calculate the distance as if the car was constantly moving at a given speed. Voice control is enabled in the settings and requires access to the microphone and speech recognition.

The navigator also warns about speed cameras, railroad crossings, traffic lights, and road signs, including "Give Way" and "Stop." The interface has Ukrainian voice prompts.

Does LOST work without the internet?

According to the description in the App Store, the application runs without the Internet, and the route already mapped remains available even after the connection is lost. This can be useful in situations where problems with the mobile Internet occur along with GPS.

LOST does not require an account. The app features dark and light themes, large buttons, and the ability to use the map in portrait or landscape mode.

The navigator is currently available for free for iPhone in the Ukrainian App Store. There is no Android version in the description provided.

It is important to understand that LOST does not guarantee an accurate location. The calculation depends on the set speed, stops, and timely position correction. Therefore, the application should be used as an auxiliary tool, comparing the tips with the real traffic situation and signs.
